ELA RESOURCE SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER
Reports to: Principal
Job Objectives:
Plans, implements, and evaluates curriculum-based learning experiences using a differentiated curriculum that addresses the individual needs of students enrolled in a special education program.
Works with colleagues to ensure the provision of all services mandated by state and Federal law.
Supports an inclusive educational environment.
Provides guidance and support to help students mature and make appropriate choices.
Helps students pursue their academic and vocational goals.
Actively encourages parental involvement.
Minimum Qualifications: Holds a valid State of Ohio teacher certificate/license appropriate for the assignment.
Meets all mandated health requirements (e.
g.
, a negative tuberculosis test, etc.
).
Provides documented evidence of a clear criminal record.

Closely monitors student use of E-mail and the Internet.
Provides pre-vocational and career information.

Serves as a resource for students seeking additional information or trying to improve skills.
Organizes and maintains complete and accurate records, reports, and inventories, as required by law, district policy, or administrative directive.
Submits all reports on time.

Complies with district procedures to account for the collection of student fees.
Evaluates and documents student progress.
Shares information with team members as needed to support educational and/or behavioral goals.

Provides periodic reports to parents (e.

Makes reasonable provisions to be available to parents for consultations when requested (e.

Serves as a resource to other teachers with special education students in their classrooms.
Suggests teaching techniques, instructional materials, behavioral modification strategies, and/or adaptive equipment that will enhance the educational process.
Supports student progress with appropriate emotional development and interpersonal relationships.
Counsels students to help change attitudes and behaviors (e.
g.
, positive outlooks, dependability, cooperation, active participation, accountability, consistent attendance, punctuality, etc.
).
Prepares and carries out behavior modification plans that help students achieve performance objectives.
Clarifies expectations.
Identifies privileges and consequences.
Charts behavior when required.
Firmly confronts undesirable behavior calmly and fairly.
Rewards responsible actions.
Maintains working relationships with community partnerships associated with students educational programs (e.
g.
, vocational rehabilitation services, job training sites, employers, child welfare services, health facilities, etc.
).
Visits students homes and work sites when necessary to support program goals.
Consults with district staff as needed to address student concerns (e.
g.
, excessive absences, at-risk behavior, mental/physical health, family/peer relations, etc.
).
Reports evidence of suspected child abuse as required by law.
Makes a referral for a multi-factored assessment when a need is indicated.
Works with the intervention assistance team as directed.
Supports the efforts of guidance counselors, speech/language pathologists, school psychologists, and other program support specialist.
Prepares and carries out Individualized Education Plans (IEP).
Seeks assistance as needed to identify environmental and instructional modifications that support the attainment of educational goals for students.
Provides opportunities for students with disabilities to participate in appropriate peer group activities.
Offers small group and/or individual tutoring services to reinforce concepts introduced in inclusive educational settings.
Modifies testing environments when necessary to promote student success by addressing specific learning disabilities (e.
g.
, reading test questions, transcribing student responses, providing additional time, etc.
).
Participates in periodic reevaluations and annual review conferences.
Makes recommendations concerning the placement of students for the next year.
Provides close supervision and takes reasonable precautions to ensure student safety.
Does not leave students unsupervised.
Monitors students medical and/or physical care needs.
Learns to operate personal assistive devices.
Supervises assistance provided by attendants or educational aides.
Ensures that prescribed procedural guidelines are followed as trained by a licensed health care professional.
Supervises non-classroom activities that support educational objectives (e.
g.
, field trips, training experiences, employment activities, etc.
).
Shares in the responsibility for authorized committee work and school activities.
Encourages parent organizations and supports student activities as time permits.
Promotes the proper use and care of school property.
Keeps track of school supplies and equipment assigned to students.
Stores supplies and equipment at the end of the school year.
Participates in staff meetings and in-service training.

Reviews literature and participates in a variety of activities to keep current with promising research and effective instructional strategies.

Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases.
